Beware Of Veld Fires

Beware of veld fires

The Livestock Welfare Coordinating Committee (LWCC) issued an alert for veld fires and livestock. The fire season is usually from late July to early October in most areas of South Africa. Some areas have had good rains for several seasons, which means that the grass is high and flammable. The LWCC recommends the following guidelines:

• Burn fire-breaks in June (see the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 – obey the laws).
• Choose low-wind days, early mornings.
• Inform and co-ordinate with the neighbours.
• Work with local Fire or Disaster Management Committee.
• Ensure that fire hazards are eliminated or reduced alongside open roads.
• Warn staff of dangers and what actions to avoid.
• Have a fire alert system in place.
• Check that fire-fighters know what to do.
• Check that the fire-fighters have protective clothing and serviceable equipment.
• Check that vehicles and equipment are in good order.
• Have escape routes and evacuation plans for livestock in place.
• If livestock have been injured in a fire, use the Guide on the LWCC website to assist with categorising animals for light or extensive treatment, or euthanasia http://lwcc.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Veld-Fires-and-Livestock-Guidelines-for-Farmers.pdf
• Be sure to assess animals for both superficial (skin) injuries and deep (lungs) damage.
• Consult the local veterinarian for advice.
